Why Can't I Get Pregnant?

by Jessica
(Michigan)

My husband and I have been trying for a baby for about a year now, and nothing has happened. It seems like everyone around us is having babies except us. I have been told that I am able to have babies, it's just going to take longer due to my cycle. I no longer have insurance through my job and it makes it difficult to ask questions or get the advice I need. My cycle tends to be every other month between the 14th and 18th, which is the most regular it has ever been. I am in my mid twenties, and I know that I still have plenty of time to become a mom, but I'm not sure how much longer I can wait. Please help me!

Need More Information
by: Sally

Jessica,

I'm sorry you're having difficulties. I know it's hard to be patient. A couple questions for you to help me understand your situation better.

* Do you know why your cycles are irregular?
* Are you overweight?
* How is your diet?
* How much caffeine/alcohol do you consume?
* Do you smoke?
* Are you using any ovulation prediction methods? If so, are you ovulating each month?
* Are you on any medications for any reason?
* Any health conditions?

Your answer to these questions could help me to better assist you.

My Answers
by: Jessica

My cycles aren't too irregular - they just come every other month on the 18th. I'm of average weight for my height. I eat 3 meals a day, and I never eat out. I could eat a little healthier though. I drink one to two cups of caffeine a day. I smoke, but I'm on the road to quitting. I'm not using a prediction method. I'm not on any medications and have no health conditions. Thanks!

Three Recommendations
by: Sally

Three things I would recommend right away:

1) Stop smoking completely.

2) Cut down on caffeine.

3) Use at least one ovulation predictor method. I used 3 - BBT charting, cervical mucus observation, and ovulation predictor kits. I talk about this more in the "How To Get Pregnant" section of this site.

It may take a few months to get a good idea of when you're ovulating and get the nicotine out of your system, but this will definitely improve your chances of conceiving.
