Vitex Agnus-Castus and Fertility

What is vitex agnus-castus?

Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chastetree berry, chasteberry, monk’s pepper, or simply vitex, is a fertility-promoting herb that is useful in treating hormonal imbalances.

What are the benefits of vitex?

In clinical studies, taking vitex extract has been shown to help stimulate ovulation, stabilize the reproductive hormones, and promote regular menstrual cycles. Hormone balance and regular menstrual cycles are major keys to regular and healthy ovulation and thus getting pregnant more quickly.

Vitex helps to increase luteinizing hormone (LH) while mildly suppressing the secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).

Vitex is especially helpful in maintaining progesterone levels during the luteal phase of a woman’s cycle, which can help prevent or resolve a luteal phase defect. Vitex agnus-castus can also potentially help resolve PCOS, as the regulation of progesterone can help resolve ovarian cysts and estrogen dominance that may be the cause of the PCOS.

The use of vitex agnus castus in women with hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels) has resulted in reduced prolactin levels as well.

Can vitex help you get pregnant?

One of the benefits of vitex, as indicated above, is that a woman can use vitex for ovulation stimulation if she’s having trouble conceiving based on ovulation difficulties.

Vitex side effects

There are no known vitex side effects. Taking vitex extract can only improve your hormone imbalance. Because it is not a hormone itself, its use will not increase or decrease your hormone levels, only act on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands to normalize and balance reproductive function.

Vitex can be taken continuously for up to 18 months. As it is not a fast-acting herb, its benefits increase over time, with maximum benefit achieved after a few months. When pregnancy is achieved, however, vitex should be discontinued.

Increased fertility and vitex do go hand in hand to help women get pregnant more quickly, especially those women with ovulation and hormone imbalance issues.
