Early Pregnancy Tests
Do you know which home pregnancy tests are better than others?
Do you know which ones can detect pregnancy the earliest?
Let's talk about these tests - what they detect, how early they can detect a positive pregnancy, when to test for pregnancy, which tests are the most effective, and how to test.
What They Detect
Home pregnancy testing detects the hormone hCG, which stands for human chorionic gonadotropin, in a woman’s urine. This hormone is secreted by the developing placenta shortly after pregnancy implantation - when a fertilized egg has implanted in the uterus.
How Early Can They Detect?
How early a pregnancy is detected is determined by the concentrations of hCG in a woman's urine and the sensitivity of the test used. Concentrations of hCG are measured by mIU. The lower the number, the greater the sensitivity. Thus, a test that detects 20 mIU is more sensitive than a test detecting 50 mIU.
When To Test For Pregnancy
A woman can begin testing for pregnancy as early as eight days after conception, but it is better to wait until you have missed your period. I know it's hard to wait during the two week wait - I tested many times before my missed period - but my positives usually came on the day my period was due. HCG does not begin to show up in the urine before pregnancy implantation, so testing too early will waste a test (and most likely discourage you).
Which Tests Are the Most Effective
Most women want to know if they're pregnant as soon as possible during the two week wait, so naturally the test with the lowest mIU is the best bet. Here is a chart comparing a few of the more well-known brands:

How to Test
For the earliest detection of a pregnancy, use first morning urine, as this urine is more concentrated and contains the highest amount of hCG. If this is not possible, then avoid
urination for several hours before testing in order to get a more accurate reading. If you are drinking lots of water and urinating frequently, this can cause urine to be diluted and can decrease the amount of hCG in the urine, which will interfere with early detection.
