Pregnancy RashIf you have a pregnancy rash, there are a number of things that could be going on. Many of the changes in a woman's body during pregnancy are not really that well understood by doctors and midwives, and a rash in pregnancy is one of those things. While there are a few conditions that might mean that you should see a dermatologist or a specialist, most of the skin conditions that cause a rash in pregnancy are completely harmless. The following are specific types of pregnancy rashes, their causes and potential treatment options. Be sure that you talk to your doctor or midwife before using any treatments. Generalized Itching This is also called pruritus, and it may occur because the skin in pregnancy is being stretched to its limit. It is characterized by itching of the skin, which is exacerbated by skin dryness. Be sure to keep your body well hydrated by drinking at least ten glasses of water per day. Treatment options for generalized itching include:
Pregnancy Itching Also called pruritus gravidarum, this type of pregnancy rash is caused by the increase in estrogen and progesterone in your body during pregnancy. It could be the result of your liver needing to work extra hard during the rigors of pregnancy. There might be a tinge of jaundice as well. Your doctor or midwife will want to get the results of lab work before they discuss treatment options with you. Yeast Infections on the Skin Pregnancy is a very opportune time for yeast, or candida, to grow. It will even grow on the skin and occurs more often in pregnant women than in any other group. It presents as round, red, itchy areas on the skin and may even peel. This type of pregnancy rash typically occurs in the creases of skin such as under the breasts or under arms. Treatment options include:
Red Palms This characteristic pregnancy rash on the palms is also called palmar erythema and occurs in up to 66% of Caucasian women. It is typically benign, though your doctor will probably want to perform liver blood tests to make sure that your liver is healthy. This rash in pregnancy typically does not itch, though it can be frightening to look at. Scalp Itching Pregnant women sometimes even get a rash on the scalp. The increased levels of estrogen in the body cause this. Using a tar shampoo can help treat the symptoms of this type of rash. Dermatitis of Pregnancy This is a rare skin condition in pregnancy and presents as a very itchy rash all over the body. It looks and itches like hives. You can get this type of pregnancy rash in any trimester and it can take up to 10 days to resolve. This rash almost always goes away when pregnancy is over. Your doctor or midwife will likely prescribe corticosteroids to treat this condition. PUPPP Also called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy. This is a very rare, very itchy condition that usually strikes in the last trimester of a first pregnancy. It presents with an itchy, pimply rash on the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. It is very itchy and is treated with corticosteroids. Your doctor or midwife will need to see you to help diagnose the causes of this condition. While skin issues and pregnancy rashes are fairly common, pregnant women coping with these rashes are likely to be desperate for a break from the sensation of itching. Taking an oatmeal bath will help many of these rashes and will help sooth and soften the skin. Please consult your doctor or midwife if you have a pregnancy rash that you feel is out of the ordinary. Your practitioner will be able to help you get rid of the rash and back to your pregnancy glow in no time!
