Pregnancy Pillow

A pregnancy pillow is an elongated pillow that is helpful through all aspects of pregnancy.  Also called a maternity body pillow, these comfy pillows are versatile, easy to use, and allow the user to find comfort in almost every situation.

Pregnant women should consider purchasing a maternity pillow to help them through every trimester.  Here are some ways the pregnancy pillow can be used to help increase comfort throughout the pregnancy, labor, and birth.

First and Second Trimester
Maternity body pillows help a pregnant woman figure out how to sleep on her side, which is recommended during pregnancy.  As the woman’s uterus grows, her comfort with stomach
and back sleeping will ebb. Thus, she will need to find a comfortable position in which to sleep.

Women are advised to not sleep on their backs because of the potential for compression
of the vena cava, the largest vein in the body.  Using a maternity body pillow can help a woman properly position herself to sleep on her side, and help prevent any issues with circulation.

Third Trimester
Women in the third trimester of pregnancy generally feel physically exhausted when they fall into bed at night.  Their bodies are working very hard to ensure that their baby is growing well.  Women deserve a comfortable night’s sleep and having a special maternity pillow can make that happen.  Lying on the side is sometimes uncomfortable at this point because of the amount of relaxin in the body, which works to help soften joints, including the joint at the pubic bone.  Maternity body pillows can help support the whole torso and the hips with just one pillow.  This is very helpful for women late in pregnancy.

Labor and Birth
For labor, it’s very important to be able to find a place of comfort.  This is sometimes very difficult to do, but it is vital because a tense body prevents the labor from progressing in a normal way.  A pregnancy pillow can help a woman find a comfortable position so that she can relax and let all the tension out of her body.  She can also use the pillow to prop herself up while pushing.

For Breastfeeding
The joys of pregnancy pillows don’t stop with birth!  You can continue to use the pillow once your baby is born as well.  You can use it for breastfeeding support, which you’ll spend a lot of time doing in the beginning.  Also, if you have had a cesarean birth, it’s good to have a way to sleep that helps support your whole abdomen.

Once your pregnancy and early postpartum time is over, you just may not want to part with your special pillow. And you don't have to. You can continue to use the pregnancy pillow for comfortable sleeping arrangements for the rest of your life!
