Pregnancy and Depression

Pregnancy and depression can be a very troublesome mix. Pregnancy on its own brings about a lot of varied emotions, likely more so than any other 9-month period that a woman will ever again experience.

Anticipation, joy, trepidation, and excitement are only a few of these emotions, but perhaps one of the more unexpected feelings is that of depression.  Depression during pregnancy is fairly common, but it is usually mild.

If you are a pregnant woman trying to deal with depression, it is very important to know that you are not alone!  Many cases of depression are actually the down side of mood swings that naturally occur because of the influx of hormones that affect feelings and thoughts.  A large number of women, however, experience mild-to-moderate depression that has no relation to mood swings.

Pregnancy and Depression Causes
  • *  Socioeconomic conditions. Financial stress can create depression by worrying about your ability to afford feeding and caring for your baby and yourself.
  • *  Lack of support from the baby’s father. For many different reasons, some men do distance themselves when a woman becomes pregnant.  This can create overwhelming feelings of being alone, which easily induces depression during pregnancy.
  • *  Sense of self becoming lost. This occurs most often in first-time mothers-to-be.   Some women may worry that once their baby is born they will become immersed in being a mom, and their individual identity will become lost.
  • *  Health concerns. Health concerns for either yourself or your baby might cause anxiety-based depression during pregnancy.
  • *  Fatigue. Pregnancy does take its toll on women both physically and emotionally.  Depression has a habit of hitting when a person is exhausted.
As you can see, pregnancy and depression can often occur simultaneously.  Regardless of whether the cause of your depression is one of these listed or something else, it’s important to identify the root so that you can manage your symptoms.

Common symptoms that arise when pregnancy and depression combine vary from woman to woman.  If you experience unusual fatigue, a disruption in your sleep pattern, stronger than normal shifts in mood, loss of interest in activities, or problems eating (either loss in appetite or a desire to constantly eat) you may be battling with depression.

It is necessary to deal with any of these symptoms, as they can have a negative impact on both you and your baby.  When the problem persists for two weeks, it should be brought up to your doctor or other medical professional.

When you are going through pregnancy and depression at the same time you need to make sure you eat properly by following nutritional guidelines, get rest when you can, and accept (or ask for) help when you need it.  The ability to talk openly and honestly with someone you are close to (partner, mother, friend, doctor, or anyone else) is also beneficial.

Pregnancy is a wonderful time, yet it is dizzying enough without adding in complications such as depression during pregnancy.  Many of us have gone through, or are currently going through, pregnancy depression.  It is not a condition that only one woman has lived with, it is common.

Rest assured that you are not alone, and you do not need to feel guilty about pregnancy depression.  Accept it, take the steps you can to conquer it, and...please...talk about it!
