Ovulation Days & Ovulation Signs

Your ovulation days are the most important times of the month if you're trying to get pregnant.  Ovulation fertility increases as a woman approaches the time that her egg is released and awaits fertilization, so it's vitally important to know when ovulation is in order to increase your chances of conception.

When is Ovulation?
It is imperitive for a woman to know her ovulation days in order to get pregnant more quickly. Sure, you can just have intercourse whenever you feel like it, and you will probably eventually conceive.  But if you're wanting to speed up your efforts, or if it's been taking way to long, tracking ovulation is very important.

Basically, ovulation days are midway through the menstrual cycle, but it varies greatly from woman to woman. On a basic level, you must at least track when your periods occur, or when your bleeding starts each month.

Ovulation Calculation
There are many different ovulation calculation methods to help you know when your most fertile time of the month is. I recommend you utilize at least two or three of these
in order to maximize your efforts.

  • *  BBT (basal body tempurature) charting is a great indicator of when you ovulated after the fact. This is recommended to do for at least three months before you can see a pattern to your cycle.  See more about BBT charting here.
  • *  Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) are a fantastic way to know when ovulation will take place. If used properly, they can indicate pending ovulation within 24-36 hours, so you can ramp up your baby-making activities.  More about OPKs here.
  • *  Ovulation mucus observation is another great indicator of approaching ovulation. A woman's cervical fluid increases greatly about a week prior to ovulation, becoming very wet and prolific. It is often referred to as "egg White" cervical mucus due to its resemblance to raw egg white. This mucus is very fertile and actually helps transport sperm to its destination safely to fertilize the awaiting egg.  More about cervical mucus.
  • *  Cervical position is another key indicator that ovulation is close, as the cervix rises high in the vagina when ovulation is near. This takes checking from the day following the end of menstrual bleeding up to ovulation in order to understand the different positions of the cervix. The cervix starts out low and dry and at ovulation rises high and becomes sensitive to touch and very wet.
  • *  Ovulation saliva testing is another key method of tracking ovulation and fertility.  The saliva sample is collected and placed on a special saliva microscope. Within a minute or so, you will observe a pattern in the saliva that will indicate whether ovulation is near.  Read more about ovulation saliva testing here.

Ovulation Signs and Symptoms
Your ovulation signs are indicators that your ovulation days are approaching or that it has already passed. Here are a number of them:
  • *  Spotting Ovulation
  • This bleeding at ovulation occurs right around the time of female ovulation days. It's unclear whether the spotting is before, during, or right after ovulation occurs. Many believe it is a result of the egg being released from the follicle.  Others believe it is due to a rise in estrogen causing a slight shedding of the uterine lining. Regardless, it is another good sign that a woman is ovulating and generally when it is occurring.
  • *  Ovulation Mucus
  • Another of the ovulation signs to look for when calculating your ovulation days is cervical mucus. The consistency of a woman's cervical mucus, or fluid, is a great indicator of approaching ovulation. As noted above, the cervial fluid becomes very wet, prolific, and the consistency of raw egg whites as ovulation nears. Read more about cervical mucus observation here.
