Can uterine fibroids and fertility go hand in hand, or do they cause infertility? Let’s talk about what fibroids are, the symptoms of uterine fibroids, and treatment for uterine fibroids, including herbal remedies for uterine fibroids.
What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Fibroids are benign tumors located in the uterus. They are so common that about 25% of all women have them, many being totally unaware with no symptoms. Fertile women as well as infertile women have them, and it is believed that in general fibroids do not cause infertility or hinder a woman from getting pregnant.
However, they can be large enough to hinder fertility and cause complications in pregnancy. Growth of fibroids is affected by estrogen and progesterone. Therefore, if there is an imbalance of either of these two hormones, this imbalance may be the cause of infertility instead of the fibroids themselves.
Fibroids can also hinder or block implantation of a fertilized egg, thus making conception difficult or impossible.
Women of color are more likely to have fibroids than white women, and theirs grow more quickly as well.
Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids
- Pain in the abdomen or low back.
- Pain during sexual intercourse.
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
- Anemia due to heavy menstrual flow.
- Difficult or frequent urination from the fibroid pressing on the bladder.
- Pelvic pressure.
- Infertility or miscarriage.
Treatment For Uterine Fibroids
A myomectomy is the procedure to surgically remove fibroids. This is not recommended except for extreme cases, as surgery always has the potential for causing adhesions and scar tissue that can further hinder fertility. I believe natural methods are a better alternative to surgery unless they are very severe and painful.
Eating three or more servings of whole grains and/or beans daily reduces the size of fibroids and also helps prevent breast and endometrial cancers as well.
A vigorous exercise program can greatly reduce the size of fibroids as well as promote regular ovulation.
Acupuncture has been known to help reduce the size of fibroids.
Reduce fibroids by reducing your exposure to estrogens. Avoid birth control pills and other hormonal treatment drugs.
I recommend herbal remedies for uterine fibroids in order to increase fertility and eliminate discomfort the fibroids can cause.
Herbs that strengthen the liver are beneficial in helping to rid the body of excess estrogen, which promotes fibroid growth. Some liver-strengthening herbs are milk thistle, dandelion, and nettle.
Fibroids and fertility can go hand in hand, but getting rid of your fibroids or greatly reducing them is best in order to make sure that you’re optimally fertile.
